Mature Skin Series : What is Mature skin and do i have it?

So many times I write a post and mention having “Mature Skin” and many people have contacted me to ask me how they would know if they have it, and is it just about being older? After speaking to many experts in this field I thought I would put a little post together to give you a general idea of what “Mature Skin” is.

Firsly, Mature Skin is not always defined by age although more people over the age of 35 tend to show the beginning characteristics of Mature Skin. However, it begins with your lifestyle, which can have a detrimental effect on your skin.

As we get older the metabolism of cells becomes slower. The synthesis of Collagen is reduced and dehydration creeps in. Add to this those lifestyle factors i mentioned : Stress, Illness, Medication, Smoking, Sun damage, Lack of sleep and diet and it all adds up. But how do you know if you have a Mature Skin? Well for some people it is very obvious and for some of us it just creeps up!  Some tell tale signs of mature skin are:

Drier Skin

Thin Skin

Lack of Firmness

Deep set Wrinkles

Make up Dissapearing

Loss of Luminosity

Lack of Tone

Open Pores

Hyperpigmentation and Age Spots

Fear not though, you really can look after your skin at this Mature Stage. Obviously prevention is better than cure but somethings in life cannot be helped. Take me for instance, i had a great skincare routine from the age of 16. I’m talking high end skincare, facials and cleansing every scrap of make up off. But, my skin is struggling with all those things listed above. I have worked in London, I  traveon the Underground being subjected to enviromental agressors, I used to be a smoker, i have had two children, which never bloody slept! I have a Chronic Health Condition and life’s usual stresses and strains to deal with and my skin has suffered, but i know how to turn it around from dull and lifeless to glowing and healthy.

Decleor Bi Phase Cleanser

All it takes is knowledge of what YOUR SKIN NEEDS. For this i really would recommend you go for a facial with an expert who can do mapping of your skin and tell you exactly what is going on with it and what stage it is at. I know this can sometimes be costly, but local spas and salons often have deals on, otherwise ask your family to chip in for your birthday! Read some of my Favourites HERE and HERE

Obviously we cannot turn back the clock as our skin will age but with the correct routine and products we can most certainly delay that process and make the best of our skin so that is looks healthy. Over the next few posts on my blog (which I will update here) I will be posting the perfect products for Mature Skin from everything such as cleansers, toners and moisturiser to oils, exfoliants and masks so do keep popping back and taking a look.

Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Eye Serum

However what i will tell you to do right now is invest in a great SPF, without using sun protection, it doesn’t matter how great, well recommended or expensive your skincare is, the sun will cause irreversable damage if you do not use sun protection.

So, embrace life and the ageing process, after all, the older we get the more memories we have, and start to learn more about your skin and invest in products wisley. Ask “what can this product do for my skin that no other one will”, be prepared to hydrate the skin, use acids, strengthen the skin and protect against aggressors.

Nothing is impossible, you just have to have a little knowledge and be prepared to look in the mirror! Who is with me?

Hi Sharon. I am with you. We are the same age and I also have health conditions and numerous meds like you do. I don’t suffer with lack lustre but the opposite. Redness and sensitivity. All the others apply. I use my ultra sun face for spf. I look forward to reading your posts in this series. Always looking for inspiration from you. I found this an interesting post, thank you.

Great post – my skin is still trying to figure itself out as it is quite prone to hormonal acne… It is better than it used to be, but I still wish it would stay clear! Thanks for sharing!
